The Artist
Lauryn Marshall (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist born in St. Louis, Missouri. She received her BA in Studio Arts and Psychology from Mills College in Oakland, CA in 2021 and has done various projects in the Bay Area as a result. As a budding muralist, she uses public art as a way to spotlight and promote visibility for the communities they are located in. In her personal work, she showcases her expressive style highlighting Black culture and iconography. Marshall uses her ceramic and painted works to portray aspects of the Black experience that are recognizable, while also emphasizing the roots from which they stem from. She encourages her viewers to make connections between what is present in contemporary culture versus its past representations in history. Color, figure and object composition, and fantastical elements are major components for her storytelling in art.
She is a guest artist with Civic Design Studio which creates community art installations around Oakland. She also works directly with youth of all ages as an educator, mentor, near-peer, and program coordinator.
